In addition to being a traveling songwriters' in-the-round concert, Strong Voices is also a very small traveling Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, with a wide range of religious beliefs among its members.  We often add a Sunday service at a local UU church or fellowship to our concertizing activities!  Although the subject matter of our programs is wide-ranging, all of them use music combined with the spoken word to create services that provide an exciting and uplifiting spiritual experience for any Unitarian Universalist congregation.  A sampling of service topics is below:

Lilith Said No:  Lilith was Adam's mythical first wife (as oppposed to Eve, his mythical second wife).  Lilith dared to demand equality with Adam, and said "no" when the angels of god tried to bring her back to live under Adam's domination.  Because of this, she has been interpreted by religious scholars as a demon.  This is a service on saying "no" to those things that would limit our possibilities, and "yes" to those things that make our lives richer, more satisfying, and better for everyone!

The Gospel According to Barbie - the Impact of a Cultural Icon on Budding Women in our Society:  Barbie came into the world while we were young; her outrageous shape and ever-increasing wardrobe became a symbol of what young girls could grow up to be - perfect in every way. Growing into a sense of security about one's self and one's spirituality is the hardest task we can accomplish; the underlying theme of this service will be the struggle between reality and cultural pressures. We'll examine some positive options to the "Barbie phenomenon."

Music is Our Salvation :  Each of the presenters has devoted a substantial portion of her life to music. Each will present a short homily on why she chose a musical path, what it has added to her life, and what, if anything, she has had to give up for it, as well as the spiritual meaning it has had for her.  Each will choose a musical piece to present that is typical of the music that she has chosen to focus on.

I Was Thinkin' 'Bout Time - Time on our hands, not enough time, time past, time yet to come - our lives are fenced in by this elusive - some would say illusory - concept of time. Is it possible to find a balance?

The Gardener's Hands: the Passing of Love Through the Generations: The perfect Mother's Day service!  The way of the Mother who gives birth to children is a special path; and there are other types of "mothering" that can be done by those who do not have children of their own, either by choice or by chance.  Anyone can be a Mother if they wish to be one!

I Sing the Body Electric:  A service on embracing and using the gifts that each of us has been given, and on letting go of envy of those whose gifts are different from ours.

Even UUs Get the Blues:  A service on music that is sad, or "blue," and why it can sometimes make us feel so GOOD, and also on humorous songs that make us laugh about things that we don't usually consider funny.

WHAT ABOUT MONEY?

We will work within your budget!

  • We wilI accept the standard fee, if you have one, that your church pays to outside lay presenters.
  • A concert sponsored by your church the Saturday before a Sunday service may be substituted for or added to the fee for the service (a good arrangement if your budget does not allow you to pay a full standard fee).
  • A concert may be made into a benefit for the hosting church, with the proceeds split between Strong Voices and the church in agreed-upon fashion.
  • Contact us - we CAN work something out!
